ZAMBOANGA FOOD GUIDE : 10 must-try food and where to find them || PINAYAVENTURES FOODTRIP

I had 5 days to spend in Zamboanga City. Besides the family reunion, exploring beautiful places, one of the highlight of this trip is "Foodtrip".

I had the chance to visit roughly around 20 establishments and I loved them all and so I came up with these 10 must-try food in Zamboanga City. I can't promise to keep the list to just 10 so i incorporated some of them in just one category.

10. PASTIL - is a Tausug delicacy that you will find even on small stalls in Zamboanga City. It is best eaten with it's spicy sauce. I first came to know about this delicacy thru my husband and since then I would occassionally join him as it is one of his favorites. It is best enjoyed in the morning as it will definitely wake you up with it's flavor. There are 2 variants, the one with togue and the other with bihon inside.

Location: Pilar St. Zamboanga City

Besides Jimmy's Satti house you may also get Pastil at Dennis COFFEE GARDEN and other Muslim areas like Baliwasan and Sinunuc

9. SATTI - is a common food in Southeast Asia, particularly in Malaysia and Mindanao, Philippines. It's main ingredients are small.pieces of beef, grilled on hot coals until it becomes red-black in color. Eaten together with rice cooked in coconut leaves, it dazed on red-couloured, spicy sauce.

Satti is an exotic food. It signifies the unique ties between Christians and Muslims.

Satti is also a breakfast meal in Zamboanga and most shops open as early as 4am.

Location: Pilar St., Zamboanga City

There are other establishments serving Satti in the City like Dennis Coffee Garden and Romeo's Place.

8. TIULAH ITUM - is a beef or goat soup-stew of Tausug origin in Sulu(JOLO). It is also called the black soup usually eaten at Muslim weddings and festivals.

Location: Rizal St. Zamboanga City

This is my first time trying out this dish and it is "sabroso" (Chavacano term for dwlicious). Tiulah itum is also served at Romeo's Place and Dennis Coffee Garden

7. MALAYSIAN SATAY- is a dish of seasoned, skewered and grilled meat, served with a sauce. Satay originated in Java, Indonesia.

This is also my first time trying this dish out and it is "sabroso" indeed.

6. MERYENDA AND REFRESHMENTS

DARAL- coconut crepe rolled rice crepe filled with hinti(coconut sweetmeat)

Daral is one of the Tausug delicacies that Zamboangueños have learned to also love together with:

JUALAN- deep fried bananas served with a tasty dip

PUTLIHMANDI- purple rice balls rolled on coconut flakes

PALIKAMBING- banana fritters

PANGGIH-PANGGIH- soft and chewy flour rings

APAM- Sulu's native pancake

All of these delicacies you can find at Dennis Coffee Garden. Best enjoyed with their coffee.

Zamboanga also offers local merienda that you would surely love like:

Location: Don Alfaro St. Zamboanga City

I am happy to have found this place in Zamboanga that offers a bit of a twist from the normal. I know this is available in other places but nonetheless it is refreshing to know that Zamboanga now offers a lot of options and alternatives.

4. BILAO'S - this type of meal can be found in almost all famous restos in Zamboanga. It varies per restaurant but basically they would like for the guest to get a taste of what they have to offer.

Bilao's are available in Mano Mano and Romeo's place as well. The best i have tried so far is the one from COUNTRY CHICKEN.

3.  PAELLA- is a Valencian dish. It has ancient roots, but it's modern form originated in the mid-19th century near the Albufera on the east coast of Spain adjacent to the city of Valencia.

I am personally not a fan of Paella's till i tried Country Chicken's version. According to the owner he taught his security guard to cook it and now his version is even better than his own.

2. CURACHA - is also known as Spanner crab or red frog crab is a local Chavacano (Zamboanga's dialect) name given to Ranina ranina, commonly found in the waters of Sulu province and Zamboanga.

Location: Don Alfaro St. Zamboanga City

Alavar is well known in the city for their Curacha, when you ask around on where you could get Curacha I am sure they will say Alavar.

Alavar also sells their own sauce that you can bring home to recreate this dish.

They also have Bagon Gata that you can eat with rice and fish or green mangoes

1. KNICKERBOCKER AND HOMEMADE ICECREAM

Who does not love dessert?

To sum up our Zamboanga Foodtrip, we need to satisfy our tastebuds and our sweet tooth.

Available at COUNTRY CHICKEN
Location: Km.4 Pasonanca Rd. Zamboanga City

ZAMBOANGA KNICKERBOCKER- is a delicious mix of tropical fruits, sweet milk, and ice cream. Do not leave Zamboanga without trying this sweet dessert.

  1. Viandas of the Zamboangueño Ethnic Nation:
Paella, Tamal, Rebosao o Rebosado, Bagon Gata, Curacha, Bilao (pronounce as /bi-la-oh/.

bdw, te Zamboangueño Paella is not similar to the Tagalog Paella that looks like a Valencia. Paella Zamboangueño is actually a Seafood Dish with Rice while Valenciana is purely Rice sauted with spices like Pimenton, Paprika, Chili, Fresh Tomatoes, et.al. What you have in the photo does not seem to be the Original Zamboangueño Paella.

You didn't mentioned this in your article. However you did mentioned and emphasize on the Viandas/Viand/Foods of the Tagalog Ethnic Nation: Tiula Itum, Daral

I mentioned this because I belong to the Zamboangueño Ethnolingusitic Nation, and I found it biased for not mentioning us.

For the pastil and Satti, these are originally from Malaysia but are not considered as native delicacy for both the Tausug Ethnic and Zamboangueño Ethnic, only varies in the flavor and taste.

Lastly, the name Chavacano is NOT a dialect but a LANGUAGE.

    2. In popular usage, a language is written in addition to being spoken, while a dialect is just spoken.

Never either see or heard a book or a class with organized and well developed topics teaching how to speak chavacano.

      ( Just sayin :) )

  2. Hi.. Salamat sa paglalagay ng origin ng mga delicacies. Some bloggers don't do that, kaya nagiging "Zamboanga's food" sya at hindi nabibigyan ng credit yung actual culture and its people kung san yung origin ng food. Hehehe

By the way, in Sulu Jualan is served with just sugar and no dip at all, the best yan sya ipartner sa native coffee ng Sulu and also the Pastil is best eaten in the afternoon or siesta as a snack, hindi talaga sya breakfast food per se pero some people eat it for breakfast kaya okay lang. But if you're in Sulu, pastil shops will start to open around the afternoon during that time din madaming tao ang dumadagsa sa mga pastil shops. Hehehe. Ahm, Tausug living in Zamboanga kasi ako kaya I know these things.

Anyway, thanks for the blog. It was fun reading it. Hope you'll visit Zamboanga again soon
